BC: How did you start designing fonts? When did it become a business?
TDF: I created my first font when I was still in school. It was for a project, and I really enjoyed the results I got, as did my tutors and peers, so I thought that I’d try to sell it online. I promoted it through my blog and sold a few copies. Then I thought, if I can have this much luck with my fonts, I should help other young designers sell their fonts too. So from that, Ten Dollar Fonts was born. I started to approach designers online, asking if they wanted to sell there fonts on the site too.
BC: What is your design process like?
TDF: Normally when have an idea, I’ll let it burn in my head for a few days, and then when the motivation hits me, I’ll just get on the computer and do my thing. Idea generation takes the longest for me, I really like to push myself.
BC: What are some of your influences? Whose work is inspiring you?
TDF: I’m influenced by the other designers selling on Ten Dollar Fonts, their fonts and graphic design in general is amazing. But if I had to pick my so called typography favorites I would go with Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones.
BC: Can you talk about using Pulley to sell your digital files? How has your experience been?
TDF: Pulley is great! I love it! My site couldn’t function without it. At the start, I was manually emailing fonts out, but people were getting annoyed with having to wait, and I was struggling with the large amounts of orders. With Pulley, I don’t need to do anything, the site runs itself. It’s super easy to and the stats are excellent.
BC: And how has your experience been with Big Cartel? What’s your favorite BC feature?
TDF: Big Cartel is superb. I’ve never had any major issues and the support team is very helpful. My favorite feature is the flexibility of designing the store. Big Cartel and Pulley are all I need.
